The game is set in North Africa during World War II . Afrika Korps vs. Desert Rats features graphics 3D rather successful and detailed, as the traces of tracks on the sand, the real-time shadows, localized damage, explosions, varying weather effects … The missions range from simple recognition in the desert, the escort through the fortress siege. The game boasts a high level of combat realism and varied tactics. All assignments begin with an information session, a summary of the historical background and management phase. At any point the player can pause the game, think about tactics, and give specific orders before returning to real time.
A video game, called D-Day , also developed by Digital Reality on PC, was released in August 2004. It is considered as a result of Afrika Korps vs. Desert Rats , the events taking place at the time of the landing in Normandy the 6 June 1944 and continuing until August 20, 1944.
The game takes place in real time in the heart of the desert. The story that shading is more reminiscent of an adventure game than a strategy game. Two friends of studies, one British and one German, will find themselves by chance in front against one another in the Libyan sands and lead, in the words of Rommel, a “war without hate.”
Early in the game, three people imprisoned in Algeria in Fort Lallemand in 1941, a British Sinclair, a Goose American and French Lafarge. They manage to escape from the Fort with a truck and met a German officer Hartmann broke down in the desert. Sinclair knows since it was one of his rivals in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Despite their current status of enemies, the old friendship is always present between the two men. Therefore, the game is far from hordes of Sudden Strike. A mission includes the main goals needed to win, such as protecting a convoy, destroying an enemy base, hold a position … Secondary objectives as well as hidden objectives allow, if met, earn prestige points and unlock special units it is then possible to select in the battle preparation phase.
