God of War II is an action adventure game developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) in 2007 for the console PlayStation 2 (PS2). It is the second installment in the God of War series but chronologically the sixth, and the sequel to God of War of 2005. The game is loosely based on the Greek mythology and is set in ancient Greece with vengeance as its central motif. The player controls the main character Kratos, who is the new god of war, after he killed the former god of war Ares . Kratos betrayed bythe Olympian gods king Zeus , which deprives him of his divinity and then kill him. Kratos pulled slowly towards the underworld but is rescued by the Titan Gaia , who gives him the mission to locate “the Sisters of Fate” ( goddesses of destiny ), then they can give him the power to travel back in time to prevent his death and revenge on Zeus.
The game is very similar to the previous game and focuses on the combination based battles waged with the player’s main weapon – the Blades of Athena – and secondary weapons acquired during the game. It contains the so-called “Quick Time Events” (QTE), which requires players to complete different game control actions in a certain time order to defeat powerful enemies and bosses. As elective battle options, the player has up to four magic attacks and power-enhancing ability. The game also features puzzle and platform elements. The gameplay of God of War II resembles very much the gameplay of the original game, but the puzzles are improved and it contains four times as many bosses.
God of War II has been hailed as one of the best Playstation 2 and action games of all time, and was awarded “Best Xbox Game” at the Golden Joystick Awards . In 2009, was listed God of War II by IGN as the next best PlayStation 2 game of all time, and both IGN and GameSpot regard it as PlayStation 2 era ” swan song “. The magazine Complex called 2012 God of War IIfor the best PlayStation 2 game of all time. It was the best selling game in the UK during the first week after it was released and it was sold 4.24 million copies worldwide, making it the fourteenth best-selling PlayStation 2 game of all time. Along with the God of War improved and released God of War II, November 17, 2009 as part of the God of War Collection for PlayStation 3 (PS3). A novel version of the game published in February, 2013.
God of War II is a single-player game that is played from a third person perspective seen from a fixed camera perspective. The player controls the character Kratos play through the elements of the combination-based combat, platform and puzzle game and battles against the enemies that mainly stems from Greek mythology , such as the harpy , minotaurs , gorgons , griffins , Cyclops , kerberoser , sirens , satyrs and nymphs . Other monsters created specifically for the game, such as the undeadlegionnaires, Ravens, undead barbarians, beast Lord (beast men) rabid dogs, wild boar and Ödesgudinnornas army comprising sentries (guards), Guardian (guardian), juggernauts (monsters) and high Priests (priests). Several of combination attacks used in God of War will come, and the game is more than twice as many boss battles and more difficult puzzles than the previous game. [ 17 ]Platform parts require the player to climb the walls and ladders, leap over chasms, swing with ropes and balances between the beams to get through parts of the game. There are some puzzles that are relatively simple, such as moving a box so that the player can use it as a tool to overcome an obstacle, while other puzzles are more complex, such as finding more items in different parts of the game to unlock a door. [ 18 ]
In addition to the regular health -, magic- and experience points coffins , which are deployed throughout the game world, the player can also find three uber-coffins. Two of these chests provides additional contribution to health and magic meters, and the third chest contains an abundance of red and gold globes. Several urns are also hidden in the game (such as Gaia’s urn), which after the player completed the challenge mode to unlock special abilities (eg, unlimited amount of magic) that can be used during the bonus game.
