The Witness (in Spanish the witness) is a video game 3D belongs to the genre of puzzle created by Jonathan Blow , developed and published by Thekla, Inc. The Witness was released for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 4 on January 26, 2016, with version of iOS scheduled for a later date.
Inspired by Myst , The Witness puts the player to explore an open world in an island filled with a series of natural and man – made structures. The player advances to the resolution of the puzzles are based on interactions with labyrinths presented in panels around the island. The rules and the results of the solution of individual mazes are part of the puzzles that players will have to come themselves learning through visual clues around the island and through records of audio that the player can find. The gameplay is intended to include the less educated as possible, especially for the players are raring to get to understand the rules of these puzzles for them and so too may be coming to moments of great epiphany in exploring the island. The final game has about 650 total puzzles to be solved, although the player is not required to solve all of them to finish the game.
It was originally announced in 2009, The Witness had a long period of development. Blow began working on the title in 2008, after a short break following the release of Braid . Braid’s financial success allowed him to hire a larger team, fifteen at its peak, to develop the title and maintain his vision of what the end game would not make sacrifices. This included the development of its own game engine to have a strong control over the visual style of the game, and engage with the artists and building and landscape architects to fill the natural and man-made structures on the island while retaining a visual representation simplistic. This led to a long period of development, extending the game’s release date from 2011 to 2016, which virtually encompasses a generation of consoles. Plans original publication included platforms PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 , but were abandoned because the game engine became too demanding, and opted to develop the console version for the PlayStation 4 , as he claimed Sony this was more open to independent developers.
The Witness is a game of puzzle in first – person view. The player, as an unnamed character in itself is located on an island with numerous structures and natural formations. The island is divided into ten sections arranged around a mountain that represents the ultimate goal for the player. Within each section, the player will encounter numerous, and once the player has completed all the puzzles in one section, a turret will gold around that section and shine a light into the mountain. The player must complete only part of the puzzle in the game to complete this goal and reach the ultimate goal. The game end has over 650 puzzles , estimated Jonathan Blow, the average player will take about 80 hours to solve them . the puzzles include some believed that less than 1% of the players would be able to solve. some puzzles are based on distinctions of color or audio signals, the people with color blindness or hearing impairments would have great difficulty for resolution; Blow declared that the game still can be completed without these puzzles make only a small fraction of the total number.
All puzzles are based on mechanics trace a path through a labyrinth path; the aim of these puzzles is not always simply to complete the maze, but to find the right way of several of them, you must complete the puzzle correctly. For example, a puzzle is to find a path that divides successful black and white areas marked on the panel. The puzzle within each section are based on a similar mechanical, often with a sequence of puzzles that appear at the beginning of each section are designed to help the player to identify and understand the mechanics. In the later puzzles two or more different mechanisms in the same puzzle are combined.
