The Talos Principle
Unnamed protagonist – a robotic android – wakes up in a strange, serene world. I turned to him a divine, disembodied voice, who calls himself the Elohim , which tells the player that he created the world and the hero himself. Now in his behest hero must explore this world in search of sigils , each of which is hidden in a variety of puzzles to understand the enlightenment and “bring glory to themselves and their kind.” Soon, android discovers in the center of the world’s great tower, the top of which is hidden behind the dark clouds high. Elohim is strictly prohibited hero climb this tower under threat of death.
As soon as the robot explores the world, he finds numerous reports from other creatures similar to him, who had previously traveled to the world and questioned the environmental reality and the word Elohim. He also drew attention to some strange phenomena such as flashing and changing elements of the environment and architecture, showing that all around – not real and the virtual world , which is also confirmed by other signs and messages. Android is the island with the messenger – the same as he androids, who are without question the Elohim. The ubiquitous computer terminals protagonist finds a variety of documents, texts, correspondence of people and e-mails , from which he learns about what fate befell mankind. It turns out that in the past, humanity was infected with a deadly ancient virus , which is millions of years was in stasis in permafrost regions , and awoke after global warming by reducing the livelihoods of infection and resulting in a loss of understanding of death. This virus was exposed only primates and humans. Unable to find a remedy against the virus, a group of researchers in the last impulse decided to collect and preserve all the information accumulated by mankind and knowledge in the reliability of computer memory banks, before the virus completely destroy civilization . In addition to this information, in terminals Android faced with the unknown creature programs of Milton , which comes with the character in philosophical debates about the nature of life, reason and convinces him to oppose the will of Elohim and him.
After collecting all the android sigils, Elohim offers the hero a chance to join him, but not without the help of Milton Tower continues to attract players with its mystery, which is also supported by the rest of the hidden sigils, especially if leading deep into the Tower. In the end, the player to have a choice as to finish the game. If a player decides to join the Elohim, driven by promises of eternal life, it is moved to the beginning of the game as a new android, forced to go through the whole cycle again. If the player finds all the sigils and decides to find out what lies in the depths of the Tower, not rising to it, he is given the opportunity to become one of the Messengers, to help the other players. If a player does not obey Elohim and rises to the top of the Tower, he learns that this world is a computer simulation , testing ground for continuously regenerated versions of artificial intelligence , involved in the process of developing and solving puzzles in an attempt to create a perfect, intelligent AI, the ability to show manifestation of ingenuity and independence, their own will in opposition to the Elohim that fueled by Milton. Elohim comes to anger and warns the hero that if he continues his ascent, the whole world will be destroyed. On the upper levels of the tower there are two other android, Shepherd (Rus. Shepherd ), and Samsara (Rus. Samsara ), who were also able to climb the tower, but have not progressed further. Shepherd is trying every possible way to help the protagonist to go further, while the Samsara prevent him.
Having passed the final stage and ascended to the top of the Tower, the protagonist is in a place similar to paradise – white clouds and majestic golden gate, behind which is found the last terminal program, which acted on behalf of the Elohim and discouraged as a player and other AI from climbing On the tower, as it was the ultimate goal of simulation and meant the destruction of the world and its inhabitants. Milton persuades the player to import into your memory accumulated knowledge to them – all the information that humanity has managed to collect and preserve before his death. After that, the world of simulation begins to break, and the combined data of the protagonist and Milton sent to the real world, where loaded into the real robot created in the framework of the project «Extended Lifespan» (Extended Life) to preserve human knowledge. Android wakes up in the building of the complex and out into the real world, devoid of humanity.
The Talos Principle was born out of experimentation studio Croteam with new gameplay elements in Serious Sam 4 , IMPLIED, for added variety to the usual formula of Serious Sam. By creating a series of complex puzzles with these elements, the team was greatly encouraged by the new concept and decided that the mechanics can go for independent game . Croteam worked the main world puzzles and eyeballs to the story of the game, and then brought to work on the game two independent writers , Tom Zhuberta and Jonas Kiratzesa , who developed a detailed script with a philosophical slant, based on the ideas of transhumanism , as well as other important topics and questions about the nature and essence of humanity.
While working on the game, the developers faced the problem of the creation and rapid testing of fully working puzzles, with the result that might arise various unforeseen technical and logical problems that prevent passage. To prevent such a situation, one of the staff Croteam, Nathan Brown, who previously held the creation of bots for other games, including the console versions of Serious Sam 3, has developed an experimental robot, who was involved in the passage created puzzles and learning based on the basic actions of real people- testers (such as, for example, turning off or placing a cube turret on the pressure plate in order to solve the puzzle). Then, as the design and creation of puzzles, they tested the bot and is configured in such a way that it has no problems in solving them. If bot find an obstacle or contradiction in the logic puzzles, not allowing him to solve it, it is automatically informed of the problem by using the built-game message system bugs and then used cheats to go further and finish the test. Given the nature of software and high speed robot action, the passage of the game with an indication of bugs takes him 30 to 60 minutes. These tests allow developers to quickly make changes to the build of the game and test them quickly, especially after adding new gameplay elements. Ultimately, according to Croteam, the bot spent on testing a total of about 15 000 man-hours at the time of the public test version, and the developers are planning to use this technology in their future games. To test the game also involved real people, who noted more rigorous challenges, perfecting the aesthetic look of the game before its release.
For the first time The Talos Principle was demonstrated to the public at the launch of Sony at E3 -2014. Publication Time wrote about it, as one of his “favorite unsung gems of the exhibition” . Prior to the game, Croteam released in Steam free trial version for operating systems Linux , OS X and Windows , which included two levels with five increases with the complexity of the puzzles and a benchmark to test the bot. Croteam also made a small complimentary mini-game called «Sigils of Elohim», which was presented several sets of puzzles with tetramino presented in the full version of The Talos Principle. Croteam have tried to attract the attention of ordinary gamers to his game and built a community around her fans through various competitions and games hands.
March 24, 2015, Croteam and Devolver Digital announced the addition to the game called «Road to Gehenna» ( eng. Way to Hell ). Out DLC planned for the second quarter of 2015 and later on Windows PlayStation 4 as part of the full game.
